    IYPF Approved Projects

    Project Name: Firefly Brigade Network
    Project Location(s): Philippines
    Project Leader: Carmen Villasenor

The Firefly Brigade is a citizen's action group formed in 1999 to work for clean air and a habitable, people-friendly environment in our cities.  The fireflies have fled the region because of air pollution. All of us, cyclists, walkers, runners, pedestrians, commuters, even those who drive cars, all of us who live, work and raise families in the city are in danger of suffering the same fate as pollution remains unabated due to discharges from motor vehicles and factories. We are also in danger of disappearing like the fireflies, but we can choose to fight for clean air and bring the fireflies back.

The project aims to establish a tour of the fireflies: a citizen's bike ride toward liveable cities and good governance (every April). Accompanied by the scheme entitled "Recycle - a - bicycle": donated bikes and bike parts are given to poor youths.
For more information and / or to get involved, see the firefly brigade website and their TIG project page

Project Name: The Natural Edge Project
    Project Location(s): Australia
    Project Leader: Charlie Hargroves
The main aim of the project is to produce an informative and practical 300 to 350 page book titled Toward a Sustainable Future and develop an online companion database, both highlighting current pioneers and future directions for sustainability in the AustralAsian region. The core strength of this project will be the emphasis on collaboration with peak organisations and bodies, including the Institution of Engineers Australia (IEAust); Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO); World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO); environment-industry advocates and members; and the Rocky Mountain Institute.

The publication will be modelled on the Rocky Mountain Institute's highly successful collaborative books, such as Factor 4: Doubling Wealth, Halving Resource Usage and Natural Capitalism: The Next Industrial Revolution. The work will examine key sustainability issues and ways forward from a business/innovation perspective.  It will use case studies to support its arguments and will build on the work of leaders in the field, including Professor Michael Porter, from the Harvard Business School and Nobel laureates in economics Arrow, Debrau, and Stiglitz.

The publication's central functions will be (1) to present the business case to CEOs, board members, and shareholders for the adoption of sustainable practices already occurring both locally and globally, and (2) to enable capacity building of practitioners, public servants, managers, and professionals in order to help them make substantial progress toward sustainability. The technologies featured will take at least two to three business cycles to fully integrate within the world economy.  Thus, as the material is developed and continually updated, it will remain at the leading edge for at least a decade.

More generally, the publication will develop an extensively referenced, cost-effective overview of the adoption of sustainable practices in many fields of great importance, and as such will gain wide demographic appeal. The project secretariat will apply a whole-of-society approach to partnerships for sustainability in order to promote multi-sectorial involvement in the creation of more genuine wealth and employment, to ensure the protection and enhancement of natural and human capital, and to develop a competitive advantage.

Globally there is a growing awareness that serious progress toward sustainability must involve the whole of society, not just a few pioneers here and there. Presently no single book or central web site provides an authoritative overview adequate to link people to whatever they need for their station in society.

    Project Name: Barefoot Power
Project Location(s): An Australian business working in China, PNG & Fiji
    Project Leader: Stewart Crane

Barefoot Power started from an idea. From www.ifc.org/led, about $38 billion/year is spent on kerosene lighting, probably aorund $200 million/year in Papua New Guinea alone. In a short period of time, this project grew to become a new business, helping villagers to access renewable electricity, using an innovative business model that builds a power system gradually, using sustainable energy sources, improvements in lighting services, and the ingenuity of local people.  Barefoot power is an Australian business, now developing partnerships in China, PNG, and Fiji.  “We have a vision to provide electricity services to 1 million people over the next 5 years, and to achieve this, we will need to attract significant investment in our business over the next 18 months”.  Website: www.barefootpower.com.

Project Name: Basics For HIV/AIDS Control Project (BaHiCo)-Uganda
    Project Location(s): Uganda
    Project Leader: David Katamba

The BaHiCo project addresses the HIV/AIDS pandemic In Kampala and Luweero, districts of Uganda. It targets people living with HIV/AIDS, HIV/AIDS Orphaned children, and Youths (especially girls and ladies). HIV/AIDS since its diagnosis in 1982, has left over 1.7 million orphans, and 1.5 million other people infected, of these infected 60% are youths. The spread is due to risky sexual behaviors, lack of adequate access to HIV/AIDS information, peer pressure and inadequate participatory control dissemination measures. Therefore BaHiCo supplements on the ongoing activities to mitigate the further spread through new innovations like Virtual dissemination, & sensitization, broader awareness campaigns, networking, and through internships. These activities will make an impact on HIV/AIDS situation through Online cost saving techniques like Online discussions, E-Library and index, Issue based exchange programs, running periodicals, sharing technical staff, among others. The project has no donor for its activities and members use their own resources to run it.

The goal of BaHiCo is to reduce further the spread of HIV/AIDS in Uganda, and specifically decrease HIV/AIDS statistics regarding girls:boys ratio and orphans, and also increased efficiency in HIV/AIDS services delivery.
